This volunteer role is crucial to the mental and physical wellbeing of the dogs in our care. We rely on our kennel assistants to help us to maintain our high standards of cleanliness in our kennels, to help our dogs adjust to their new environment and to encourage the dogs to come out of their shells in hopes of finding new homes.

What you will be doing

The main task for a kennel assistant are:-

• Ensuring that the full morning clean of the kennels is completed to a high standard.
• Assist staff with feeding the dogs.
• Clean and disinfect the side yard.
• Clean and disinfect the meet and greet room.
• Perform spot cleans throughout the day to ensure that the pen is always clean for the dog living in it.
• Prepare enrichment activities for the dogs.
• Taking dogs into the meet and greet room or side yard and providing mental or physical enrichment.
• Washing and drying all of the dirty pet bowls.
• Emptying the bins.

A big part of this role is to play with the more energetic dogs, have a cuddle with the more affectionate dogs or simply talk to the more timid dogs to help them become more confident around people and ultimately help them on their journey to being adopted. We also encourage our volunteers to take photos of our dogs that we may be able to use on our social media or website to get the animals adopted. • Ensure that the full morning clean of the cattery pens is completed to a high standard.
• Feed all of the cats according to the feeding plan for that animal.
• Perform spot cleans throughout the day to ensure that the pen is always clean for the cat living in it.
• Washing and drying all of the used pet bowls and litter trays.
• Sweeping and mopping the floor in the catteries.
• Emptying the cattery bins.

What you will be doing

The main tasks for a volunteer speaker are:-

• Attend events and raise awareness for/and on behalf of The Destitute Animal Shelter.
• Speak to the public about the shelter, our work, rehoming facts and figures, adoption process, etc.
• Encourage people to support the shelter in any way that they can.
• Taking photo, if permitted, at events to be used for social media, our newsletter and website, or promotional material.
• Conduct presentations, if necessary, about DAS and our work.
• Networking with local businesses, charities, fundraising committees, etc.

When and where

Our volunteer speakers will be required on an as-and-when basis as we would need to have events in place for them to speak at on behalf of DAS. On a similar note, the hours required may also be subject to change due to the event that is scheduled. The volunteer speaker will need to travel to the event location, set up any roller-banners, presentation, leaflets/hand-outs etc.

When the event finishes the equipment will then need to be returned to the shelter along with any takings and left over prizes.
