Volunteer Speaker
Destitute Animals Shelter Bolton
Posted 8 months ago

This volunteer role is crucial for raising awareness, garnering support and educating members of the public about the work that we do at The Destitute Animal Shelter (DAS). We rely on our volunteer speakers to talk at local events including, but not limited to; college/university open days, fundraising events, school or business meetings, etc. This is an important voluntary position as it helps us to spread awareness for the shelter, increase support with either physical or monetary donations, and hopefully aid adoptions too!

What you will be doing

The main tasks for a volunteer speaker are:-

  • Attend events and raise awareness for/and on behalf of The Destitute Animal Shelter.
  • Speak to the public about the shelter, our work, rehoming facts and figures, adoption process, etc.
  • Encourage people to support the shelter in any way that they can.
  • Taking photo, if permitted, at events to be used for social media, our newsletter and website, or promotional material.
  • Conduct presentations, if necessary, about DAS and our work.
  • Networking with local businesses, charities, fundraising committees, etc.

As mentioned, a key part of this role is to raise awareness for the work that we do at The Destitute Animal Shelter. We would not be able to rescue, love and rehome as many animals as we do without the support of our volunteers, adopters and the public – their donations, whether they are food, money, their time, bedding, cat litter, services, etc are the lifeline that we need in order to help our dogs and cats to get the vet care, food, and loving homes that they deserve.

At times you may be asked to “buddy-up” with other volunteers or members of staff for some tasks. However, this role may also include working on your own.

Skills, experience and qualities needed

All of the volunteers at our shelter have to be a minimum of 18 years of age as a matter of health and safety and for insurance purposes.

Ideally our volunteer speakers will have:-

  • A full, clean, driving license and access to their own vehicle.
  • For some events you may be required to have an advanced DBS check.
  • A real passion for the health and wellbeing of dogs and cats.
  • To have experience in customer facing roles or with the public.
  • Previously rescued dogs and/or cats from the shelter or worked with us in some capacity.
  • A minimum of two references.

When and where

Our volunteer speakers will be required on an as-and-when basis as we would need to have events in place for them to speak at on behalf of DAS. On a similar note, the hours required may also be subject to change due to the event that is scheduled. The volunteer speaker will need to travel to the event location, set up any roller-banners, presentation, leaflets/hand-outs etc.

Support offered

We rely on our volunteer speakers to help get the word out about the work that we do for the animals in our care and those that have, or may be waiting for, their happily ever after! If there is anything that we can reasonably do to support you – please come and have a chat with a member of the management team.

What you could get out of it

Our volunteer speakers will get immense satisfaction that their help is making such a big impact on the lives of many of the local abandoned dogs and cats. As well as gaining valuable first-hand experience of the work that goes into running The Destitute Animal Shelter.

Other relevant information

Please do note that when working with any animals it is possible that injuries may occur – in the form of scratches or bites.

Any and all injuries, no matter the severity MUST be reported to a member of staff and logged in the accident book.
