Mabel was found living as a stray on the streets of Birmingham, completely terrified of people and the world around her. Thankfully, a kind dog warden was able to safely trap her and reached out in desperation for a rescue space. Luckily, we were able to say yes — and Mabel made the journey to our shelter.

When she first arrived, Mabel was so frightened that she wouldn’t leave her kennel for an entire month. Everything was overwhelming for her, and she simply didn’t know how to cope.

Despite her fear, Mabel is the sweetest little soul. She hasn’t shown a single ounce of aggression — just pure fear and uncertainty. Underneath that timid exterior is a gentle, sensitive girl who so desperately wants to feel safe.

Mabel now trusts three members of our staff and has started going on very short walks with them. These may seem like small steps, but for Mabel, they are huge milestones. Every day she is learning that not all humans are scary and that the world can be kind.

Mabel is a very fearful and anxious little girl. When she first arrived, it took us an entire month just to help her feel safe enough to step out of her kennel. Everything with Mabel is slow, steady, and always on her terms.

Because of her anxiety and the trauma, she has experienced, we don’t believe Mabel will be ready for adoption for at least 6 months to a year — possibly longer. She needs time, patience, and consistent support to build her confidence and learn that the world isn’t such a scary place.

While she stays with us, we are committed to giving Mabel everything she needs.

Everything is done at Mabel’s pace. We never push her beyond what she can cope with, and every tiny milestone is celebrated.
